  • Portfolio and roles: You need to track AI use cases, data lineage, third-party models, providers, and organisational responsibilities. It is important to classify by risk level and jurisdiction.
  • Governance: It is important to create a cross-functional AI risk committee. You should publish policies on Responsible AI, transparency, human oversight, and AI governance standards.
  • Risk and impact assessment: You should always standardise AI risk assessments and AI impact assessments for fairness, robustness, misuse potential, and mitigation, with formal approvals.
  • Lifecycle controls: Integrate bias testing, robustness testing, monitoring, rollback, and red-teaming into engineering workflows. Keep versioned documentation.
  • Incident readiness: Expand response plans to AI-specific risks like model drift, harmful outputs, and prompt injection attacks.
  • Metrics and reviews: Track override rates, fairness metrics, and conformity status. Conduct audits and management reviews regularly.

Given the EU AI Act deadlines between 2025 and 2027, organisations should adopt a staged plan:

  1. Baseline assessments and governance rollout
  2. Lifecycle control integration into engineering workflows
  3. Competency building and first internal audits
  4. Remediation and evidence gathering
  5. Optional ISO/IEC 42001 certification

This 12–18 month sequence helps organisations avoid last-minute compliance scrambles while producing procurement-grade evidence to win new contracts.

To prepare for the regulatory wave, organisations can take three practical steps now:

  • Conduct an inventory of all AI use cases and perform an AI impact assessment to identify risks around bias, privacy, and accountability.
  • Establish an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) to align internal practices with the AI management system standard and demonstrate compliance-readiness.
  • If your organisation is already ISO/IEC 27001 certified, extend your Information Security Management System into AI governance for efficiency and audit alignment.

The rise of AI governance standards is about creating the foundation for trust. Businesses that act early with ISO/IEC 42001 will not only reduce compliance risks but also strengthen customer confidence and responsibly accelerate AI adoption.
